Where does this compression occur? Most often the compression a nerve takes place right after it exits your spinal column. For sciatic nerve pain patients, here is one stretch that can be done in the relieve of your own home that targets the lower back.

First, find a flat exterior where you have sufficient room to move colse to without hitting any objects. Once you have found a spot that is comfortable for you, prop your body up on the floor with your hands and knees touching the ground. Once in you are in this position, moderately push you lower back up towards the roof or ceiling. This will create an arch in your back. Keep arching your back until you feel the stretch, but make sure to not over do it or injury can occur.

When you found the position that create a stretch in the lower back, hold it for at least 15 seconds. Once you have held it for at least 15 seconds, relax and return to your beginning position. Try to do this 10 times to ensure that your back is being stretched.

This simple and easy stretch will should create a itsybitsy discomfort but can make a huge inequity if you continuously do it on a regular basis. Join this stretch with others, and you should see a big revising on any sciatic nerve pain that you might have. It is foremost that you keep stretching every singular day. With our busy lives, it can be hard to fit in hours of stretching, so start slow and moderately work your way into a few hours a day. As a Pilates teacher who helps clients get out of sciatic pain, I never plan I would be struck with this uncomfortable condition. But alas, the universe had a distinct plan for me. And after I got over the self-criticism for getting sciatica in the first place–I realized that I was meant to get sciatica so that I could custom on my own body how to get out of it, and then be a good resource for my clients who are in acute sciatic pain.

Using myself as the guinea pig, the most sufficient resource I found for getting out of sciatic nerve pain was with a targeted pilates routine that activated my deep, abdominal muscles, glutes, hamstrings and inner thighs, and that released my hip flexors and It band through a series of dynamic stretches.

Here are some other tricks I discovered through trial and error:*

Getting out of sciatic pain when sitting (at your desk, on a plane)

1. Plant your feet equally on the ground, with your legs either glued together or a few inches apart

2. Bonus if you can put a upholstery between your knees and squeeze

3. Squeeze your buns

4. Sit up straight, with your spine lengthened up to the ceiling

5. Scoop your lower abdominals in and up towards your ribcage

6. Align your body as if you are against a wall, with your head centered directly above your tailbone

7. Squeeze your glutes 20 times in short pulses, then sqeeze your knees together 20 times, atlernate until the pain subsides

Getting out of sciatic pain when in bed

1. Lie on your stomach

2. Glue your legs together and squeeze your inner thighs gently, like you are trying to hold a tic-tac between them.

3. Then open your legs slightly and relaxing your hips and legs while slowly rocking legs back and forth-almost like a slowly wiggle.

4. Repeat this until the pain subsides..worked for me….

Getting out of sciatic pain when driving

1. Do your best to have both legs hip width distance

2. Align your hips, spine and back of head against your car seat

3. Consequent the instructions for relieving sciatic pain when sitting
